Destination Staycation

Our Blogger Sarah Jayne Adams picks out her favourite home comforts for a Staycation!

This summer Sunderland has been blessed with the most amazing weather. Now, I’m not denying that we haven’t had our fair share of rain, however, it definitely makes up for it when the weather here has been as hot as it is in Spain (true fact). While the sun is shining we have to make the most of it, and what better way than to have your very own mini staycation.

1. Garden Party

I’ve recently moved into my first home and when the sun starts to crack the pavements the first thing I do is get out the garden furniture (which just so happens to be my living room furniture too) and get the family round for a BBQ. In my home I’ve been enjoying fusing together modern pieces with unique, vintage-inspired items, so I’ve extended this to the garden. I’ve found Next is ideal for finding contemporary furniture while TK Maxx is great for those rare and stylish pieces. Plus, Debenhams is a saviour when it comes to all the food feast essentials you need when having the family round. If you’re looking for more wow-factor pieces that’ll get the family talking I would totally recommend a visit to Tiger. Tiger is a treasure trove of one-of-a-kind accessories and quirky furnishings.

2. Sandy Shores

We’re situated right next to a gorgeous coastline and it would be a shame not to venture there when the sun is beaming down. When it comes to beach attire in Sunderland I think we can leave the Baywatch bikini at home, however, shorts and t-shirts are definitely a must! It’s all about the tropical vibes this season – think pineapples, flamingos and prints with plenty of colour and you’ve nailed it. Remember to take a beach towel with you too (or a super-cool poncho if you have kids), it’s an essential whether you’re going for a paddle in the sea or not. Plus, I’d recommend taking a hoodie. The light may last but sometimes the heat doesn’t! Remember those rainy days I was talking about? Don’t fret. If it’s pouring down and you still want all the fun of the seaside, the Bridges has its very own beach inside the centre, which is open until September 3rd.

3. Let’s Go On An Adventure

If you’re an explorer at heart, then you’ll love nothing more than getting dressed, getting in the car and traveling to one of the many beautiful places in Sunderland or beyond. No matter the weather I would always wear a set of comforty shoes and a pair of shades. To ensure your adventure lasts all day, make sure you fill up a cooler bag with a picnic-style buffet and plenty of water. You don’t go on an adventure without documenting it, so make sure you take a selfie stick or tripod with you – it’s an essential for catching those Insta-worthy moments!
