Sunderland butcher delivers goods during COVID-19 pandemic

A SUNDERLAND butcher is bringing home the bacon, to help the city stay well fuelled during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ibbitson’s, the city’s longest established butcher, which trades from Jacky Whites Market in the city centre, has extended the reach of its free delivery offer to orders of £20 or over within a five-mile radius of the city centre.

The popular food supplier, which has been operating in the city since the 1920s, is also offering a call and collect service, allowing customers to park for a few minutes in South Street – at the back of the market, but excluding the disabled bays unless they have a valid disabled badge – to pick up their produce, without fear of incurring a parking ticket.

Joanne Ibbitson, the third generation of Ibbitson to run the business, said: “These are such challenging times, and we are all having to adapt to a new way of living – particularly for more vulnerable people who have to stay at home to keep themselves safe from the virus.

“We were keen to introduce a package that would allow us to support such people, as well as to make it easier for others to purchase our goods.”

The business is offering a range of packs, designed to provide families with a number of meat products to keep them well-stocked during the lock-down ordered by Government on Sunday March 22.  A £20 pack includes 500g steak mince, 500g diced braising steak, 500g diced chicken breast, 500g back bacon and six links of home-made thick pork sausage.  Customers can also add a range of extras including a joint of boneless outdoor reared pork leg, a whole chicken or a joint of beef silverside to their pack for a small additional cost.  They are also offering a range of homemade pies and pastries.  To place an order, call the shop direct – 0191 567 4340 – or email info@ibbitsons.com.

Jacky Whites has two food stalls still open – Ibbitson’s Butchers and Thoburn’s Greengrocers, who are also offering a free delivery service https://www.thoburnsfreshproduceltd.co.uk/ – and with Sunderland City Council having introduced new parking arrangements to allow for collection from behind the market, it is easy to pick up food boxes.  To follow Jacky Whites and keep up to date with Ibbitson’s and Thoburn’s offers visit https://www.facebook.com/WhitesMarketSunderland/
